WhatsApp lead scoring: A simple method to prioritize the right prospects
May 30, 2026 · 8 min read · By Arthur Goudard

WhatsApp lead scoring should not become an incomprehensible model.
If it takes three meetings to explain why a prospect is rated 72 out of 100, the score is already of little use. A sales team needs a quick decision: to deal with now, to nurture, to discard, or to pass on to a specific person.
The score must help to act
A good score is not a CRM decoration. It must modify what comes next.
If a warm lead receives the same treatment as a lukewarm lead, your scoring is useless. If an off-target lead still ends up in the calendar, your scoring is ignored. If no one understands the criteria, your scoring is too complicated.
The article on lead scoring lays the foundation. On WhatsApp, I would go even simpler.
The four signals to capture
| Signal | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Need | What problem do you want to solve? |
| Fit | Does your situation match the offer? |
| Timing | Do you want to move forward now or later? |
| Commitment | Are you answering key questions clearly? |
These signals are often enough to create three statuses: hot, to feed, off target.
The hot status is not the one that responds the fastest. It’s the one that combines clear need, consistent fit and logical next step.
Why WhatsApp is interesting for scoring
A form captures a fixed response. WhatsApp also captures the way the prospect responds: precision, hesitation, objection, urgency, request for details.
This conversational data is useful, provided you do not overinterpret it. A short answer doesn't always mean low intent. A long message does not always mean good fit. Scoring must remain a support tool, not an absolute truth.
How to avoid false score
The false score adds points because it is reassuring. +10 for the budget, +5 for the sector, +15 for the emergency. On paper, everything looks clean. In practice, no one knows what to do.
I prefer status logic. Hot: propose a quick follow-up. To feed: send a resource or follow up. Off target: exit cleanly. To review human: transmit with context.
This approach fits better with WhatsApp lead qualification, where the goal is to decide what happens next, not to produce a sophisticated note.
Where Formlyy helps
Formlyy can convert WhatsApp replies into actionable status. The AI agent understands the need, detects fit signals, summarizes the exchange and routes the right prospects.
The value is very concrete: fewer leads randomly called back, fewer absurd no-shows, more sales conversations that start with real material.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a score out of 100?
Not at first. Three or four statuses are often more useful than a specific note.
Can WhatsApp scoring be automated?
Yes, if the decision criteria are clear. The AI should not invent what makes a good lead.
Which signal is most important?
Did it. A prospect in a hurry but off target remains a bad appointment.
